No Search Day

#NoSearchDay

No Search Day as an initiative to drive conscience around the environmental impact of each search done with any search engine. While searches are an indispensable feature in modern life, like everything it needs to be done in moderation. We often don’t think before doing a search, ‘searches’ are almost daily events such as making a phone call, walking somewhere, or getting a coffee.

There’s a complex operation that goes in place every single time we hit that search button. On average the energy consumption of each search equals 0.0003 Kwh or the lighting an LED light for about 2 minutes or a regular incandescent bulb for 17 seconds. While it doesn’t seem much, it is estimated that on average Google handles between 3 to 6 billion searches per day, which is again 3,000,000,000 to 6,000,000,000 searches a day. We will let you do the math.

No Search Day

In terms of greenhouse gases, one Google search is equivalent to about 0.2 grams of CO2. The average car driven for one kilometer (0.6 miles for those in the U.S.) produces as many greenhouse gases as a thousand Google searches. Again compounded by 3-6 billion that would be at least 3,000,000 km driven.  We have earth hour and other wonderful initiatives that aim at preservation and generate consciousness about daily activities with a carbon footprint. What would be more simple than not searching for a single day?

Google along with other tech giants, has made great efforts to reduce and curb the carbon footprint of its operation, much more than the average industry. No Search Day is not a criticism of inaction from the main tech industries but rather a shift of responsibility into the user itself.
